About the 2026 Compassion Studies Initiative:
"Engaged Anekāntavada: Jainism engaging Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism+"

About Us Image Collages

Using the Jain philosophical tool of multi-perspectivalism (anekāntavāda) as its foundation, “Engaged Anekāntavāda: Jainism engaging Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism+” teaches the public how to engage compassionately and ethically with those who hold different views from their own. This project (henceforward “Engaged Anekāntavāda”) collaboratively connects Arihanta Institute’s academic expertise in engaged Jain studies with the expertise of our colleagues in engaged Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh studies globally. The Engaged Anekāntavāda project seeks to fulfill the Uberoi Foundation’s mission to promote awareness and respect for the dharma traditions, specifically by demonstrating how Jains, Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs have and continue to promote interreligious harmony and peace despite their doctrinal differences and can therefore inspire the public to do the same. While the project will not overlook doctrinal differences across the four dharma traditions, and indeed celebrates them, it nevertheless demonstrates to our public audiences and graduate students how these differences are respected and peacefully negotiated, both in the past and in the present. These insights of interreligious engagement will also extend the uses of the tool of anekāntavāda to address the challenge of how we engage with personal, professional, and even political differences in our everyday lives.
